Inside a Smart Surveillance Architecture In a typical commercial surveillance system, such as the one illustrated here, video footage captured by security cameras in the field is transmitted and recorded by a gateway appliance, which could be either a network video recorder (NVR) or server. 

This video data can just be stored in the gateway appliance, or optionally (and additionally) be stored in the cloud. Video Management System (VMS) and video analytics software could reside on the gateway appliance and/or the cloud.

How is AI used in Surveillance AI in Surveillance is called AI Video Analytics. Pattern recognition in frames of the video stream. In the past, this was simple 'line crossing' events, which were basic motion detection. Movement is detected in regions from one frame to the next. In the past several years, this has evolved into object detection. Not only is motion detected, but the object is recognized as a person, package, pet, vehicle, etc. This processing is happening on NVR recorders, which uses WD Purple HDDs. It happens on the back-end cloud on Ultrastar HDDs. While some AI video analytics are processed and saved inside the camera itself, some systems are also verified at the recorder or in the cloud on HDD storage.

How can I calculate how much storage I need for my CCTV system? The amount of storage your CCTV system requires depends on several factors — including camera resolution (e.g., 1080p, 4K, 8MP), video compression, frame rate, number of cameras, and how long you need to retain footage.

Video format

MJPEG is an older standard for video compression. First used in the mid 1990s, it is less efficient and is likely the more common standard for lower resolution video.

H.264, also known as Advanced Video Coding (AVC), was introduced in 2003 and is an efficient video compression standard commonly used for HD video (720p and 1080p) and Blu-Ray discs.

H.265, also known as High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), was introduced in 2013 and is the latest video compression standard to be supported by newer NVRs, especially for 4K video support. Before selecting H.265, make sure that your DVR/NVR system supports this standard.

H.265+ is an enhancement of H.265 that slightly improves the compression effectiveness. Some systems offer a separate H.265+ setting. Before selecting H.265+, make sure that your DVR/NVR system supports this setting.

Video quality

Video quality describes the level of visual detail (low, medium, high) for the video format selected. This setting can be configured on some cameras. If the setting is not available in your camera, select Medium.

Scene activity describes the expected level of scene activity/movement in the video being captured (high/medium/low); higher activity will result in higher capacity needed. For example, low scene activity could include a street alley or hallway, and high scene activity could include a casino floor or busy highway.
